Our work

The IUCN Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IUCN ECARO) was established in 2015 to support the IUCN constituency and implement the IUCN Programme in most countries of the IUCN Statutory Region East Europe, North and Central Asia. To contribute to a more sustainable future for this region, IUCN ECARO focuses its work on good governance, the long-term protection of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources. The office is based in Belgrade, Serbia, and was initially established as the IUCN Programme Office for South-Eastern Europe (IUCN SEE) in 2004. The IUCN Central Asia office was officially opened in 2025, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Since 2004, when the IUCN Programme Office for South-Eastern Europe was established in Belgrade, Serbia, upon the invitation of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia, our journey has been one of growth and impact. By 2015, we had grown to a regional office, serving 18 economies, collaborating with 46 Members and a network of 774 experts in IUCN Commissions across Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia. We celebrated 20 years of inspiring a sustainable future in the region in 2024!
