IUCN launches new call for proposals to address Invasive Alien Species in Europe

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is pleased to announce the opening of a call for proposals under its European Invasive Alien Species Rapid-Response Fund

Funded by the European Union, this funding initiative is designed to provide targeted, fast-track grants for rapid actions addressing the threat of invasive alien species (IAS) in Europe. The goal is to support early detection, swift eradication, and coordinated response measures that prevent small-scale invasions from becoming large-scale ecological and economic crises.

Invasive alien species - non-native plants, animals, or microorganisms - are among the leading drivers of biodiversity loss and ecosystem disruption worldwide. In the European Union alone, IAS cause an estimated USD 28 billion in damages each year.

To support early intervention, the fund offers grants ranging from €10,000 to €50,000 for projects lasting up to 12 months. Eligible actions must focus on the early stages of invasion by alien species, including animal and plant species (as well as macroalgae), that have a high potential to spread and cause ecological harm.

This initiative directly contributes to the implementation of the EU Regulation on Invasive Alien Species, supporting Member States in fulfilling their obligations for rapid response and long-term management.

The call is open to organisations operating in the European Union, EU overseas countries and territories are not eligible, except for the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira.
