47th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting
The 47th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) and the 27th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection will take place from 23 June until 3 July 2025 in Milan (Italy). A workshop on tourism will also be held ahead of the ATCM meeting.

IUCN has long been advocating for the protection of marine biodiversity in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. As an Invited Expert and Observer within the Antarctica Treaty System (ATS), IUCN has the ability to champion policy from our members, including civil society and many member states who are parties to ATS. IUCN attends both the Antarctica Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM), where environmental and management issues for the continent are addressed, and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which focuses on spatial protection and sustainable fishery management. With the support of our Council-led Taskforce on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, IUCN recently finalized the Union's Strategy, Policy and Programme on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean (Annex 9 to DEC C112/12).
At the ATCM this year, IUCN will focus on the following objectives:
- Progress ATCM work on regulating Tourism and Non-Governmental Activities
- Encourage Marine Spatial Planning as a management tool
- Stand behind the Precautionary Principle for protecting marine biodiversity
- Contribute to the implementation of relevant IUCN resolutions and recommendations
