The IUCN Caprinae Specialist Group (CSG) practices conservation of wild Caprinae and their environments, in collaboration with IUCN itself, international and local agencies, NGOs and anybody who struggles for the same field, participating, endorsing and helping in any initiative that helps to promote the status and habitat of these species.

Mr Juan HERRERO
Co-Chair

Juan HERRERO (Rome, Italy). Associate Professor at the University of Saragossa, Spain, where he teaches Ecology and related subjects as Wildlife, Environmental Education and Protected Areas. His field of expertise is wildlife ecology and management and focuses on large mammals. He is deeply involved in long term monitoring of Pyrenean chamois, Iberian wild goat, wild boar and red deer in mountain environments and collaborates in advisory boards of Game Reserves. Currently he is the co-chair of the Caprinae Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Dr Yash Veer BHATNAGAR

  • Yash Veer Bhatnagar, PhD, is the Country Representative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) India office (since November 2022). He brings over three decades of work experience in conservation science and practice, and in programme development and management nationally and internationally. He has led and facilitated multi-stakeholder partnerships across India with government agencies including the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MOEFCC) and state forest departments, NGOs, universities, and private-sector organisations.
  • He has served as a scientist with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, an autonomous body under the MOEFCC (1999-2003) till he joined the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), Mysore, as Senior Scientist where he served as the Country Programme Director for the Snow Leopard Trust (SLT) India. He joined the Global Snow Leopard Ecosystem Protection (GSLEP) Programme Secretariat in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic as Landscape Management Planning Coordinator.
  • Dr Bhatnagar holds a PhD and master’s in wildlife science from Saurashtra University/WII, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in agriculture from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, India.
  • His primary interests are in enabling science based, participatory conservation at scale that effectively involves all stakeholders, including community, government, and private sector.
